What is Neurology?
Neurology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and medical treatment of diseases or conditions that affect the brain, spine, spinal cord, and nerves. Neurologists treat such things as headaches, seizures, dementia, strokes, spinal cord abnormalities, pinched nerves, muscular dystrophy, and neck and back pain health issues.
In addition to the above, Pediatric Neurologists evaluate and treat conditions affecting infants and children such as genetic disorders of the brain, seizures, cognitive functioning, and attention deficit disorders.
Neuropsychology is a specialty which studies the structure and function of the brain related to specific psychological processes and human behavior. The brain is the most complex organ of the body and controls intellectual functioning including, speech and language, the perception of touch, hearing, vision, memory, personality, in addition to enabling motor skills and coordination. Because neurological disorders may affect any of these functions, neuropsychological evaluations are an important part of diagnosis and treatment planning.
What is Neurosurgery?
Neurosurgery is a surgical specialty involved in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of conditions affecting the brain, spine, spinal cord and nerves. Neurosurgeons treat a vast array of health conditions including brain tumors, spinal cord lesions, pinched nerves from ruptured discs or spurs, brain and spinal injuries, and pinched or injured nerves in the extremities (such as carpal tunnel syndrome).
