Donald A. Ross, M.D.

Physician and Surgeon: Neurological and Spine Surgery

Donald A. Ross, MDBIOGRAPHY

Dr. Ross graduated first in his class from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He did his residency in neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco and was a Fellow in Cranial Base Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh under Dr. Laligam Sekhar. He then joined the faculty of the University of Michigan Medical Center as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. His practice at the University of Michigan included cranial base surgery, epilepsy surgery, brain tumor surgery, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Dr. Ross developed a national and international reputation and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. In collaboration with the Otolaryngology Department, he established a multi-disciplinary cranial base program which did a large volume of craniofacial resections, orbital surgery, reconstruction after trauma, cavernous sinus surgery, temporal bone surgery, vestibular scwhannoma resections, and surgery at the foramen magnum. As a result of his close collaborations and successful programs he was given an additional Associate Professor appointment in the Otolaryngology Department. In collaboration with the Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Ross participated in the establishment of the University of Michigan Sterotactic Radiosurgery Program, the first program in the nation to utilize multi-leaf collimation in the radiosurgical treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformations, vestibular scwhannomas, metastatic brain tumors, and recurrent gliomas.

As part of the University of Michigan Epilepsy Program, Dr. Ross performed over 450 epilepsy operations, including temporal lobectomy, corpus callosotomy, vagus nerve stimulation, and multiple subpial transactions. He has utilized techniques derived from epilepsy surgery, including awake craniotomy, functional cortical mapping, and frameless navigation to enhance the efficacy and safety of glioma surgery. As co-director of the Brain Tumor Research Laboratory, Dr. Ross ran an active basic science effort directed at the molecular genetics of malignant gliomas and the prevention of anaplastic transformation of low grade gliomas. Dr. Ross has authored over 90 peer reviewed papers and book chapters and holds a patent on a new surgical device. Dr. Ross joined Medford Neurological & Spine Clinic in 2000.

Dr. Ross’ special interests include cranial surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery and Radiosurgery.

Dr. Ross’ personal interests include music, reading, gardening and hiking.
